What is a Plastic Surgeon?
A plastic surgeon specializes in the enhancement and repair of body structures. This expertise requires comprehensive training in not only the techniques required to restore proper function, but also the aesthetic artistry of yielding beautiful, natural-looking results. Whether performing cosmetic or reconstructive procedures, plastic surgeons are often tasked with complex tissue transfer in order to aesthetically refine or completely rebuild a framework of the body. Those who sub-specialize in aesthetic plastic surgery are well-versed in the principles of proportion, balance, and symmetry, applying their knowledge to achieve a range of goals related to anti-aging, body contouring, facial rejuvenation, breast enhancement, and more.
Why Should I Choose a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon?
While board-certification is not required to practice, more often than not, accreditation by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) can communicate a higher level of surgical training, ongoing education, and dedication to excellence in all aspects of plastic surgery. This distinction is earned after passing rigorous written and oral examinations covering the entire range of surgical procedures, including cosmetic, reconstructive, and hand surgery. Furthermore, board-certification must be maintained through re-examination every ten years, requiring all surgeons to stay abreast of the latest techniques and technologies in the field of plastic surgery.
When you select a board-certified plastic surgeon to perform your treatment, you can trust that he or she has completed training beyond the bare minimum required to practice plastic surgery. This distinguishment can give you the confidence of knowing you are under the care of an individual with extensive and vetted knowledge of the entire scope of plastic surgery procedures.
